AIM Practitioner Training Course Descriptions

AIM Practitioner Level 1 Training: Foundations of AIM Using Assistive Technology

8-weeks of Live Virtual Training | One 1.5-hour-long session each week

This introductory course provides clinicians with foundational knowledge and practical tools to learn AIM Text-Based Assistive Technology. This course is instructed by Galilee Damiao, MS OTR/L, with individuals who use AIM Assistive Technology also aiding in the teaching. Participants will gain an understanding of whole body apraxia as a neurologically-based motor planning disorder that impacts voluntary, intentional movements—including those needed for self-expression and intentional pointing.

This course gives an overview of AIM (Apraxia Integration Method), the role of co-regulation, and the AIM clinical decision-making framework.  Participants will learn how to use low-tech Assistive Technology (stencils and laminate boards) scaffolding the learning to high-tech keyboards and tablets. This training includes a blend of lecture, guest lectures by individuals who use text-based Assistive Technology, case studies, practical exercises and hands-on demonstrations.

Participants will leave with concrete strategies to begin implementing AIM within their scope of practice, and will be eligible to continue on to Level 2: AIM Applied Practice Certificate of Accreditation.

Course Details:

  • Total Duration: 12 contact hours
  • Delivery: Virtual, live, with assignments and video submissions
  • Instructional Methods: Lecture, visual demonstration, guided practice, small group discussion (if live), and video-based reflection
  • Cost: $497.00

This training is intended for Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants, Physical Therapists and Physical Therapy Assistants, and Speech Language Pathologists and Special Educators. Family members or persons interested in learning AIM may also take the training without receiving Continuing Education credits.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Define apraxia and describe its neurological basis, with a focus on how it impacts intentional movement, including speech production.
  2. Identify observable features of motor planning challenges in nonspeaking individuals.
  3. Describe how assistive technologies (e.g., letterboards, keyboards) can be used to support communication and motor learning in individuals with apraxia.
  4. Apply a scaffolded motor learning framework to support movement accuracy and independence in spelling-based communication.
  5. Demonstrate beginning competence with using Assistive Technology tools and using the adaptive pathway tools through video assignment.
  6. Describe the ethical, regulatory, and relational considerations in providing access to communication for individuals with complex motor needs.

  • Attend all sessions
  • Score 80% or higher on the post-course knowledge check
  • Submit required video and reflection
  • Complete course evaluation

Financial aid funds are available, but limited. Please note in your application if you are seeking financial aid.

AIM Practitioner Level 2 Training: AIM Ap

This intermediate training is designed for practitioners who have completed AIM™ Level 1 and are ready to implement the method with clients with mentorship and support.

Participants will refine motor learning techniques and use of the AIM clinical decision making framework. Participants will implement AIM with clients and improve their skills with mentorship. Practitioners at this level demonstrate the ability to teach AIM to clients, support clients, coach families and team members in achieving purposeful movement patterns for text-based assistive technology.

This training emphasizes reflective practice, coaching strategies, and professional decision-making when supporting non-speaking individuals with apraxia who use assistive technology.

Participants will engage in recorded casework, mentorship meetings, and fidelity-based feedback cycles. This phase marks a shift from understanding to implementation, supporting clinicians as they move from guided use to independent, competent practice.

Course Details:

  • Total Duration: 6-months
  • Delivery: Synchronous virtual coaching + asynchronous assignments
  • Instructional methods: Includes coaching sessions, peer case reviews, and direct supervision from certified mentors
  • Cost: $2,800.00

Pre-requisites:

  1. Completion of AIM™ Level 1 Practitioner Training
  2. Submission of video assignment and reflection
